Well into the 21st century, international travel has become increasingly accessible. With that, comes a greater opportunity for travellers to savour culinary tastes that are unique to certain destinations.
As a seasoned traveller, our CEO and founder Mr. Aw Hun Leong had many opportunities in tasting a diverse range of quality food products in the countries he had visited. However, upon returning to Malaysia, he always found it a challenge to get his hands on the products he had enjoyed during his travels at a fair price.
He noticed that most of the foreign food products available in the Malaysian market were big-brand products only, while products that were trendy or viral overseas could not be found here. Realising that what he had experienced was a privilege that not everyone could have, he was determined to bring international gastronomic delights into the Malaysian market at reasonable prices.
“It occurred to me that it would be a good opportunity to bring these products into Malaysia so that fellow Malaysians could also enjoy them at affordable prices.”
With that goal in mind, Mr. Aw founded Box World Sdn Bhd in April 2015.
From our early days in parallel importing of food products from Indonesia, Japan, and South Korea, we soon became the official distributor and even the sole importer and distributor for many international brands for the whole of Malaysia, focusing mainly on ready-to-eat items such as confectioneries, snacks, beverages, instant noodles, canned food, and other similar products. However, we do not limit ourselves to what we can do. In a bid to provide even more options to our retailers and consumers, we have started to venture into importing frozen products last year.
At Box World, we are also brand builders. From having zero market presence to becoming household names, the brands we work with have the potential of reaching their target markets as well as fostering lasting connections and sustainable growth. We are proud of our broad range of global brands from various countries. Today, we are working with over 25 brands from 16 countries. This year (2024), with the unwavering commitment and diligence of our team, we plan to add another seven to ten brands to our expanding repertoire.
“We aim to be the largest FMCG importer and distributor in Malaysia by 2026, and we are on track so far. We also plan to introduce more brands into the country, expanding our range beyond 30 brands.”

While we speak of quality food products from overseas, we must also acknowledge the fact that many of our own Malaysian food products are worthy of international recognition. Working on the belief that our local products also deserve to be showcased to the world, we are exploring the export potential of Malaysian products starting this year.
